Hello and welcome to another blog of
Annoyed Techie. Yesterday Samsung launched its much-anticipated Smartphone that
is Samsung Galaxy 31s. Lately, Samsung with its M-series of smartphones has
tried to give competition in the mid-budget segment, and it has tasted much
success with the M-series Smartphones like Galaxy M30s, M21, M31, etc. The
Galaxy M31s is the latest in this segment and it is supposed to be a successor
to Galaxy M31. It is supposed to have a better build quality and aesthetics,
better camera, and a better charger. In this pursuit of improvements, it has also
received a price hike and launched at the price of ₹19,499 for a
6+128GB variant and ₹21,499
for an 8+128GB variant. Here we discuss what we feel about this phone.
Disclaimer: This is
not a review just a first impression.
For your ease, we have divided our thoughts
into the following different segments:
Physical
overview
Physically Galaxy M31s has upgraded the
game and has gone in line with the new and the latest Samsung Design language.
Now the display is a 6.5 inches Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, i.e., it has a
punch hole in the center instead of a notch that looks premium and modern.
Also, the corners have gone much squarish which makes it look a lot more premium.
It is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and the bezels have gone quiet
thin all around. This time around, this M-series smartphone has got a separate
plastic frame and a glastic back which has gradient finish and enhances the
premimuness of the device. This
fingerprint sensor now is embedded in the power button which is placed on the
right side along with volume rockers which are placed above the power button.
The fingerprint sensor is quite fast and the placement is also great, but the
volume rockers may seem to be placed a bit high for people with small hands. It
has a triple slot for SIM and MicroSD cards on the left side. It should feel
comfortable in the hand as it weighs around 200gms considering it has a massive
600mAh battery. It comes with a USB Type-C port along with a 3.5mm audio jack
and a single speaker, the audio from which is quite loud and decent. Overall
the phone looks quite modern and premium, and comes in two color options:
Mirage Black and Mirage Blue.
Chipset
Galaxy M31s is powered by Samsung’s
mid-range processor Exynos 9611 which is based on the 10nm architecture coupled
with either 6GB or 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB of UFS2.1 storage which can be
expanded up to 512GB through MicroSD card. This Smartphone has an Antutu score
of around 2 Lac.
Display
The display on this Smartphone is the most
premium aspect of this device. It is 6.5 inches Infinity-O super AMOLED panel.
It has great contrast punchy colors and inky deep blacks. The display is quite
bright even in direct sunlight though it is a 60Hz panel, the quality is
excellent and feels as a segment above. We expect an excellent media
experience.
Battery
This smartphone houses a 6000mAh battery
which is the benchmark. Further, the improvement on this has been made in the
form of a 25W superfast charger which can charge this monster from 0 to 100% in
just 97mins. Also, this phone can be used as a power bank as it supports
Reverse Charging. We expect a great battery life from this phone as it has such
a huge battery along with the power-efficient OS and Super AMOLED display.
Although wireless charging is absent we don’t expect it at this price.
Camera
This is the highlight of Galaxy M31s. it
packs a Quad-rear camera setup. The primary camera is a 64MP Sony IMX682 which
Samsung likes to call Intelli-cam. It also has a 12MP 123 degrees Ultrawide
camera and a 5MP each depth and macro camera. The selfie shooter is a 32MP
shooter. Samsung has packed this camera with a Flagship feature called Single
take. This phone takes 10 perspectives of a shot, which are 7 photos and 3 are
videos. This feature is available in both selfie and rear camera along with
4K@30fps video recording. We expect the cameras to perform well as Samsung’s
cameras have always been great. Also, as Samsung is hopping so much on Galaxy
M31s cameras, they could come out as the best in the segment.
Software
Galaxy M31s runs on OneUI 2.0 based on Android
10. It is one of the best Android skins out there which gives a fluid and rich
user experience while performing the day-to-day task. We expect it to perform
well in the day-to-day chores and also to provide a good gaming experience.
Although, we are skeptical as to how it will perform while doing extended
graphic-intensive gaming.
Final Thoughts
Now after considering all the above points,
we come to our final thoughts. Overall Samsung has brought upon substantial
upgrades in almost every aspect, be it the design, display, battery, and
cameras. The only thing which is carried forward is the chipset. We feel that
this phone is a great non-Chinese mid-ranger but the price hike is more than we
expected. So, we think that if you give the physical factors substantial importance
then this phone can be your next smartphone. Otherwise, Galaxy M31 seems to be
a better-priced alternative.
We will
come up with the final review of Galaxy M31s, so Stay Tuned.
This phone is available on Amazon from 30th July 2020.
