Asus ROG Phone 3: The Spec King is Back

Hello and welcome to another blog of Annoyed Techie. Yesterday Asus launched it's latest and greatest gaming centric Smartphone ROG Phone 3 for ₹49,999 for 8/128GB variant and ₹57,999 for the higher 12/256 GB variant. Asus’s ROG series have always been spec-heavy and this time it is no different. The ROG Phone 3 is the Spec King as it packs the best hardware available on any Smartphone. So, here we discuss how good the Spec King is when we pitch it against its competition.
Disclaimer: This is just our initial impression and not the final review.
For your ease, we have divided our overview into different segments. So let’s get started.
Physical Overview
ROG Phone 3 looks very similar to its predecessor ROG Phone 2. It has a 6.59 inches display protected by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The display has some bezels at the top as well as the bottom in the interest of dual Stereo front-firing speakers. The back now is much more subtle than ROG Phone 2 and the heat ventilation vent is now gone. The rear now has a Triple camera setup and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The back retains the flashy geometric lines lasered on it and an illuminated typical ROG logo with several RGB colors that flow in a pattern when the X-mode is activated. The frame is made of metal and the volume rockers and the power buttons are placed on the right side of the phone. This phone comes with an additional USB Type- C port that is placed on the left side and that can be used to connect the gaming accessories that Asus offers. On the bottom, it has the charging port which is USB Type-C. As it is a gaming Smartphone, it also has improved Air Triggers which Asus calls Air Triggers 3, placed on the right side of the frame. Also, it has 4 Microphones placed at different places for enhanced audio performance. It supports two Nano-SIM, but the support for the MicroSD card is not there. Sadly, the 3.55mm audio jack is missing. The phone weighs around 240gms which on the heavier side.
Chipset
ROG Phone 3 is powered by Snapdragon’s flagship chipset Snapdragon 865+ which is based on 7nm architecture and is clocked at 3.1GHz. It is the first phone to come with this chipset. It comes with 5G capabilities. The RAM is LPDDR5 which is around 50% faster than LPDDR4 and the storage is also the latest UFS 3.1. This chipset is the most powerful Android chipset as of today and has an astonishing Antutu score of more than 6 Lac.
Display and Speakers
The display on this phone is a 6.59 inches 144Hz Full HD+ super AMOLED panel with a touch sampling rate of 270Hz. Additionally; it has 25ms touch latency which is the benchmark today. All these should result in next-level user experience. It has a great contrast, punchy colors and inky deep blacks, and is quite bright even in direct sunlight. It also packs dual front-firing stereo speakers which go extremely loud and are quite clear and also provide great sound separation. We expect an excellent media and gaming experience from the combination of the excellent display and the crisp speakers.
Battery
ROG Phone 3 packs the industry-leading 6000mAh battery which should be enough for a full working day even with intensive gaming, and should last for around 2 days on light usage. It comes with a 30W ROG Hypercharge charger which should juice it up quite fast. It has Qualcomm Quickcharge 4.0. Although it misses out on wireless charging.
Camera
ROG Phone 3 has a Triple Rear camera setup. The primary lens is a 64MP Sony IMX 686, the secondary is a 13MP ultra-wide sensor with a 125-degrees field view, and the third sensor is a 5MP macro lens. On the selfie front, it packs a 24MP selfie shooter. Initially, the photos come out to be crisp and detailed in both natural and artificial lightings. The rear camera supports videos up to 8K@30fps and 4K@fps. The front camera can record up to 1080p@30fps. Asus claims that this time around, the camera performance will be top-notch.
Software
ROG Phone 3 runs on stock Android 10 with Asus’s minor gaming enhancing features. We expect it to provide a great user and gaming experience as it has a combination of 144Hz display and Snapdragon 865+ chipset. Especially the gaming experience should be extremely good because of the enhanced X-mode and the additional gaming aids like Air Triggers.
Final Thoughts
Like the last year, Asus has come up with another Spec King with a very reasonable price tag in 2020. It has the benchmark hardware along with stock Android. We feel that this phone will be a dream phone for gamers but it is also a great buy for non-gamers who seek to buy premium flagship smartphones. As it has everything which a premium Smartphone buyer desires and also more. Also, it comes at a very reasonable price which makes it a great value for money product. Another plus is that, it is a non-Chinese smartphone. So, we recommend this Smartphone not just to gamers but also to non-gamers.
This phone will be available on Flipkart from 6th August 2020.
