OnePlus Nord: Is the hype real?

Today OnePlus finally launched the much-hyped OnePlus Nord. Hello and welcome to another blog of Annoyed Techie. Finally, OnePlus revealed the prices of its much-awaited mid-ranger OnePlus Nord. OnePlus launched it for ₹24,999 for the 6/64GB variant, ₹27,999 for the 8/128GB variant, and ₹29,999 for the high end 12/256GB variant. OnePlus launched it in the first of its kind AR launch. In this blog let’s take an overview and discuss what it packs and how good it is as a package.
Disclaimer: This is not a review.
For your ease, we have divided our overview into different segments. Let’s get started.
Physical Overview
OnePlus Nord has 6.44 inches dual punch-hole display which is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 which also protects the back of the phone; coming to the back we have a left-aligned vertical Quad-Camera setup. Coming on to the left side, we have the volume rockers and on the right side, we have the power button and the very useful OnePlus’s alert slider. On the bottom end, we have a USB Type-C charging port, a single firing speaker, and a SIM tray that supports two Nano-SIM. Sadly, the SD-card slot and 3.5mm audio jack are missing. The phone weighs at 184gms and is available in two colors: Blue Marble and Gray Onyx. Overall, the phone feels premium and is light and handy by today’s standard.
Chipset
OnePlus Nord is powered by Snapdragon’s premium mid-range chipset Snapdragon 765G which is an upgrade to Snapdragon 730G. It comes with 5G capabilities and has three storage variants, i.e., 6/64GB, 8/128GB, and 12/256GB. The RAM is LPDDR4X and the storage is UFS 2.1. This chipset has an Antutu score of around 3.25 Lac which is around 20% more than its predecessor (730G).
Display
The display on this phone is a 6.44 inches fluid 90Hz (refresh rate) super AMOLED panel with dual punch-hole for the selfie camera. Additionally, it has a touch sampling rate of 180Hz which should give a very smooth touch experience. It has great contrast punchy colors and inky deep blacks, and is quiet bright even in direct sunlight. We expect a great media experience from this display.
Battery
OnePlus Nord packs a 4115mAh battery which is decent enough for a full working day even with intensive usages and if unfortunately you run out of juice or need a quick top-up, OnePlus has packed in a warp 30T charger which can charge the battery from 0% to 70% in just 30mins. The only thing which is missing is wireless charging.
Camera
OnePlus Nord has a total of 6 cameras of which 4 are at the rear and 2 on the front. The primary rear camera is a swap from Oneplus 8 which is a 48MP Sony IMX 586 with OIS. The rear also has an 8MP ultra-wide sensor that can capture up to 119 degrees field of view. The third camera is a 2MP macro and the fourth one is a 5MP depth sensor for sharp portrait shots.
On the selfie front, the primary shooter is a 32MP Sony IMX 616 sensor. The secondary shooter is an 8MP ultra-wide shooter with 105 degrees field of view. We expect good camera results with these good sensors combined with OnePlus’s great camera algorithm.
Software
OnePlus Nord runs on Oxygen OS 10.5 based on Android 10. It is one of the best Android skins which should give a fluid and rich user experience. We expect it to provide a lag-free user and gaming experience as it has a combination of Snapdragon 765G and Oxygen OS.
Final Thoughts
OnePlus has finally gone back to its roots of providing a great phone at a reasonable price. The phone seems to be promising and must provide a great user experience. Although, the starting price of ₹24,999 for the 6/64GB variant which is an India specific variant may seem to be very attractive. But this variant is better left out as just 64GB of internal storage will suffice almost no-one in 2020, so it feels this variant is just for the hype that it is priced below ₹25,000. One must at least go for the 8/128GB variant which is for ₹27,999. Even at this price, OnePlus Nord is not just hype, but is also a great phone and we believe that it is still a value for money offering.
It will be available on Amazon from August 4th, 2020.
